The 16-bit Era... Top 13

Ok, I know I said that the next Top 13 would deal with Food of some kind, after much soul searching I decided I'd hold off on that for later. For now we're dealing with the Top 13 Video Games from the 16-Bit Era; thats the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and the like.

  • #13 : Starflight - Genesis; features a massive galaxy with hundreds of stars to explore.
  • #12 : Gunstar Heroes - Genesis; What run-and-gun games are all about.
  • #11: Super Metroid - SNES; "Lateral Thinking of Withered Technology".
  • #10: Star Fox - SNES; First practical demonstration of 3D graphics on a console.
  • #9: Doom - SNES/32X; Oh, Come on its Doom for cryin' out loud, it is the first major first-person shooter success story.
  • #8: Mortal Kombat - SNES/Genesis; What can you say about a game that almost single-handedly created the ESRB rating system?
  • #7: Earthbound - SNES; Ranks up there with the other two RPG heavyweights of the SNES, Final Fantasy 3 and Chrono Trigger.
  • #6: Donkey Kong Country - SNES; My six-year old niece played and loved this game, it sold eight-million copies, talk about a paradigm shift in thinking compared to the NES Donkey Kong.
  • #5: Final Fantasy 3...6? - SNES; Hands down the best RPG and FF game in the series... thats right not just in the 16bit ear, but in the whole freakin' series!
  • #4: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - SNES; I don't really have to say anything about this game... it has all the coolness of the original times ten.
  • #3: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Genesis; Arguably the best Sonic game on the Sega Genesis, easily sold over six-million copies during its tenor.
  • #2: Super Mario World - SNES; Besides selling over twenty-million copies, Mario was one of the best games to be released for the Super Nintendo.
  • #1: Tetris - Gameboy; I know it might be a disappointment, but a game which sells over thirty-three million copies and has been played by nearly everyone has earned the number one spot.
Extremely Honorable Mention - [ Chrono Trigger(snes) ]

Now I know! Chrono Trigger should've been on that list, if not in the number one spot itself; But I didnt want the list to be bogged down with just RPG's. Final Fantasy 3/6 sums up the Role-playing experience nicely and really Chrono Trigger is in a league of its own, you really can't compare it to any game on that list besides Final Fantasy... Maybe Earthbound.

So there you have it, the Top 13 16bit Era video games, if you don't own them, you should; if you haven't played them, you should; if you've never even heard of them, you're an idiot. Keep checking in, for now, I will continue to remain diligent my friends; for tomorrow remains another day and who am I, but a Wookie on the Millennium Falcon.
